Laconia

Modern Sparta is located between the mountains of Taygetos and Parnonas at the valley of Evrotas River. It is constructed at the same location with the homonym ancient city and is surrounded by a fertile valley of olive trees, orange and lemon trees.

Parnonas also known as “Malevos” is the mountain range which divides two large counties of Peloponnese, Arcadia and Laconia. The highest peak of Parnonas is called “Megali Tourla” also known as “Kronio” and has 1936 meters altitude. The mountain ends in Laconia at the Cape Maleas, south of Peloponnese.

Taygetos Mountain is the highest mountain range of Peloponnese which combines beautiful hiking routes, picturesque mountainous villages, creeks, stone bridges and trees. It is located between Megalopolis (Arcadia), Evrotas (Laconia) and Messinia. The top of the mountain is called “Profitis Ilias” (Prophet Elias) and is located at 2.407 meters altitude. From Taygetos begin two rivers, Evrotas River which flows in the Laconian Gulf and Nedontas River which flows in the Messenian Gulf.

Spartathlon is an annual international Ultra Marathon race of 245.3km, which takes place in Greece since 1983 on the route of Athens-Sparta. The Spartathlon revives the steps of Pheidippides, an ancient Athenian long distance runner, who in 490 BC, before the battle of Marathon, was sent to Sparta to ask for help in the war between the Greeks and the Persians.

In the medieval walls of Monemvasia is one of the best-preserved and alive castle towns in Greece. As soon as you go through the big gate of the castle you will magically feel as you enter to a time machine! Dozens of churches, mansions of rich merchants, hammam and winding streets preserve the pure atmosphere of this settlement, which since the Byzantine times till the 19th century played an important role in the history of the region. Pirgos Dirou “Fight like a woman!”. Pirgos Dirou is a popular destination known for its natural beauty. The extraordinary Lake Caves of Diros are only about 3km away. The tour of the caves is done mainly by boat and only the part on foot. While gazing at the impressive formations of the stalactites and stalagmites you will be immersed into the mystery of the nature.

Gerolimenas “The sacred harbor of Peloponnese” This traditional settlement of the southwest Mani is a popular destination not only in the summer but throughout the year. It is situated at the east side of the cape “Cavo Grosso”. Gerolimenas is in fact the picturesque harbor of the area which was an important trading spot in the past. This fact can be related with the name of the harbor Gerolimenas which means sacred harbor in Greek.

Elia “Let’s go for a coffee in Elia”. Elia is an idyllic seaside village with beautiful beaches and sandy bights. It mainly attracts families and travelers who seek serene holidays. The little harbor of Elia, the lighthouse, the fishing boats, the olive and the orange trees make this beautiful scenery ideal for memorable photos.

Areopoli is a well preserved historical town with stone paths and traditional tower houses which were built for social and defensive reasons. The town took its name from the Greek God of War Ares and was the capital of the historical district of Inner Mani (Mesa Mani). Like the rest of the Mani settlements, Areopoli is known for the contribution during the battles of Greece against the Ottoman Empire.
