Kourouta is in fact the long sandy beach between Arkoudi and Katakolo. The beach is awarded every year with the Blue Flag due to its crystal clear water. Kourouta is a very popular destination and therefore many hotels, rooms to let and campsites exist in this area to make your vacation as relaxing and enjoyable as possible. Of course near the beach you will also find plenty of restaurants, taverns, cafes, bars and clubs. The beach is ideal also for those who like surfing and water sports in general.
The beach is about 2km away from the town of Amaliada. Here you will also find plenty of options to stay if you like. Near Kourouta there is Palouki, a small settlement with the dock, the fishing boats and of course the fish taverns!
The history of Kourouta settlement started after the Greek War of Independence, during the end of the 19th century. Agriculture and trade were the main economical activities during this period. Like in the nearby towns, raisin was the most popular product and the exportations of the local products to Europe helped this city to develop. One of the trademarks of Kourouta is the large raisin factory near the sea which was built in 1911.
Of course the exportations through the harbors of Illia gradually stopped and the place continued to develop economically utilizing the other big asset of this area, its beauty! The long beach with the crystal clear water and the extraordinary sunset attracts more and more travelers every year and therefore many touristic investments have been done in this area giving the place a cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Marathia beach is in fact the continuation of Kourouta beach. Here you will be amazed by the seaside forest with the pine trees.
Near Kourouta you will also find Roviata beach and Savalia beach.
Thines Beach is a long sandy beach near the town Vartholomio (about 4km away). It is located between Arkoudi and Kourouta and is one of the most popular in the area.
North of Kourouta you will find the Arkoudi village with the beautiful sandy beach whereas south of Kourouta you could visit the beaches of Katakolo.
Of course the most popular activities here are related with the water! Kourouta beach offers a great variety of water sports. Surfers love this place!
Riding is also possible here. You will find an organized facility with stables here that offers riding lessons or even the opportunity to ride a horse across the beautiful beach.
You could enjoy biking next to the Kourouta beach. For the more experienced bikers there is a beautiful route towards the inner part of this area of a total 66 kilometers, Kourouta-Amaliada – Gastouni –Vartholomio –Kastro and return to Kourouta. Depending on your mood and physical condition you can adjust the length of your route.
Places to visit
Kourouta is an exceptional starting point for visiting great byzantine monuments, important archaeological sites and popular summer destinations.
The Monastery of Fragavillas is one of the most important monasteries in Illia and is about 6,5km away from Kourouta. The monastery dates back in the Middle Byzantine period. Panagia Katholiki Church is also an important byzantine monument which dates back in the 12th century and is located about 14km away from Kourouta.
About 24km away from Kourouta you could visit one of the most important ancient cities of Peloponnese. Ancient Ilida was the capital of Illia in the Antiquity and also was the city which organized the ancient Olympic Games. Here was the place where the athletes trained before the beginning of the Olympic Games. In this place you will also see the ancient theater which today hosts important theatrical festivals.
Quite close to Ancient Ilida, near the Kentro village you could admire Pinios dam. Pinios dam is one of the largest dams in Europe. The constructions of the dam were completed in 1968. According to Greek Mythology, Hercules diverted the flow of Pinios and Alfios River in order to clean the Augean Stables, which was his fifth labor.
Near Kourouta, towards the North you will find exceptional places to visit with beautiful beaches and historical monuments. Arkoudi and Loutra Killinis offer beautiful crystal clear water for your summer vacation. In the village Ligia very close to Arkoudi you might also like to visit Agia Eleousa Monastery which was built in the 9th century.
You could also take the chance and visit Kyllini and the astonishing Castle of Chlemoutsi near the area or the Panagia Vlacherna Monastery, which was built according to historical sources during the 13th century.
Ancient Olympia is the most important archaeological site in the county of Illia and is located about 38km away from Kourouta. Visit the place where the Ancient Olympic Games took place and the nearby Archaeological Museum that astonishes its visitors with its marvelous exhibits. One of the most important is the statue of Hermes of Praxiteles.
